In Flanders there is a great need for reliable GIS levels with recent GIS and other data. In many cases these (GIS) data levels have several authors. Here are some examples: the 308 councils in the context of the inventory of unbuilt-up plots, the 5 provinces in the context of the supralocal cycle route networks, the Flemish and Federal government with regard to businesses and the locations where businesses are established.
The condition for a guarantee of reliability is a structured and streamlined exchange of data between various governments with regard to (GIS) data. Every owner of data remains responsible for the management of these data.
GeGIS aims to establish a Geo Data Infrastructure (GDI) in which data levels can be exchanged between various gis systems.
In addition, all the government actors should be able to look at (GIS) data in a simple way and carry out calculations. GeGIS makes this possible with no or minimal investment costs.
The first project which will work on the platform that has been developed and make use of the GeGIS philosophy and technology is 'the inventory of unbuilt-up plots' (Register of Unbuilt-up Plots – ROP).
An explanation of the aim of the GeGIS project
- The project aims to allow for the amendment and generic exchange of data levels independently of the GIS package used.
- GeGIS aims to provide an electronic office generator, based on open and generic components, which allows for the generation of interactive electronic offices and making them available. These electronic offices can be used without specific software for both consultation and management tasks (a web browser is sufficient).
The open and generic components which are developed to generate this first office are re-used to generate other electronic offices on the same platform. The framework is created in such a way that extra generic tools could be made if there were a need for these.
Various applications are now being developed with GeGIS and various GeGIS analyses are being started: the office register of unbuilt-up plots various municipal GIS offices. |
